Mandibular Advancement Splint

In cases of mild-to-moderate OSA and snoring, the Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) may be available as a therapy option. The MAS is a custom-made dental therapy device which is customised to suit your individual needs.

Once fitted, the splint helps prevent obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. The MAS brings the lower jaw forward to a position that prevents the tongue, and surrounding tissue, from falling back while sleeping.

Most private health insurance companies will provide rebates for MAS.

Your custom-made splint is easy to use and maintain. With proper care, your MAS should last at least 4-5 years. Any necessary adjustments or repairs can be made by your dentist.

Initially, while getting used to the MAS therapy, you may notice some aching of the jaw muscles and teeth. This is normal and should resolve within a few days.

Some of the benefits of using MAS Therapy include:

  • Can relieve snoring
  • Effective therapy option for most cases of mild-to-moderate OSA
  • MAS is a custom made, clinically tested, individualised medical device
  • Small, convenient size
  • Long product-life

Before being fitted for MAS Therapy, you will need a referral from a Sleep or Respiratory physician.

During your fitting, our Dentist Dr Chris Pazios will take an ‘impression’ of your mouth, teeth, and bite. This mould records the most comfortable forward position of the jaw. Based on your medical history, sleep study results, and dental impressions, Dr Pazios will select the most suitable type of MAS.

Your first appointment will take approximately 30 minutes. Your MAS will then be custom-made ready for your next appointment in 18-20 days. At this appointment, the MAS can be adjusted. This ‘fine-tuning’ is used to achieve the most effective MAS therapy results at the most comfortable position for you.
